Artificial Insemination

There are a number of ways people treat infertility, from odd fertility dances to scientific artificial insemination (AI).

Through the ages man has always fought against ailments and afflictions as best he can, and today with medical and technological advancements aplenty, modern treatments and circumventions are fast becoming more potent and thus more favored. Amongst the more popular forms of circumventing infertility is AI.

Having first risen to prominence in the 1970s, AI in a nutshell is basically artificially placing sperm in an infertile woman’s cervix or uterus. The sperm are conditioned to be more potent and have higher success rates of fertilizing eggs, while the woman is also set up for the highest conception rates her infertility would allow.

In artificial insemination, the best sperm specimens are deposited in either the cervix or uterus of the female reproductive systems. Furthermore they are implanted in a stage of the menstrual cycle when chances of conception are highest. “Washed” semen (laboratory treated; means to say they have higher chances of fertilizing and low to zero traces of any harmful or detrimental chemicals) is implanted directly into the female reproductive system at an ideal time in hopes of making the otherwise infertile woman conceive a child. Sex is out of the picture.

As such, AI can be availed of by single women wanting to have a baby without the need for a partner. They can have an anonymous donor’s semen implanted in them to be able to conceive. As for the procedure being an infertility treatment, if the infertility is in the woman, then her partner’s semen is implanted, if the infertility is in her partner, then a sperm donor comes into the picture.

Of course, this method entails checking sperm count, the concentration of motile sperm (sperm that can move properly to assail and fertilize an egg) as well as the condition of the sperm itself, to ensure that the procedure is entirely safe. Concentration of motile swimmers is kept in measure throughout the freezing and thawing processes, and the health of the sperm kept in constant check.

There is no best method of artificial insemination as the different methods themselves have several factors working for and against them, such as the age of the woman and the type of infertility being circumvented, as well as additional infertility medication being taken. In general, the pregnancy rate most patients have is around 5 to 25% chance of conceiving through AI throughout each menstrual cycle.

Intracervical insemination and intrauterine insemination are the two most common types of AI, the former being the first. In the intracervical process, healthy sperm are introduced into the cervix thereby giving them higher chances of making it through the fallopian tube and uterus leading to a blind date with a fertile egg.

In the intrauterine method, the evident difference lies in the position of the swimmers before they take off—in this case they are deposited into the uterus. For this process, only “washed” semen is allowed, and if the sperm comes from the patient’s partner then his specimen too will need to be washed.

A procedure known as double intrauterine insemination is when the process is repeated twice to theoretically increase the chances of insemination right at the ideal time—the fertility window. Experiments suggest that a single process and a double process yield just as much conceptions, but it’s entirely up to the patient if she reckons doing it twice, it would increase the chances if done so.

When the procedure first came to light, the major benefits were to infertile men and women; today though, the benefits have touched on genetic disorders and same-sex marriages. A couple of the same sex can have children of their own without adopting one through artificial insemination. Also, the semen checked and washed during the process helps ensure the absence of any detectable genetic disorder that can be passed down to the child from the paternal parent.

But how does the process rate in terms of practicality? What are we looking at in terms of artificial insemination cost? Overall costs vary, but are easily on the heftier end of the scale, as affecting factors such as the expertise and qualification required from the individual and clinic performing the procedure can be expensive. But to give you an idea, costs generally include drug therapy, investigation and diagnosis, the artificial insemination procedure itself, and the hospital stay. Other associated costs may be due, so ask your fertility clinic for any financing sources that can make the overall price easier on the budget.

When all is said and done and you want to get yourself an artificial insemination specialist, you can locate local AI clinics in your area. If you want to be doubly sure the procedure works, then you can research for famous and acclaimed clinics. Both of these research tasks can be made wonderfully easier by the Internet. A simple Google search or an intra-website search from a trusted medical or specialized website can get you exactly what you need.
